Technology careers at Airways

The Technology Group is responsible for designing, installing and maintaining the comprehensive network of hardware and software required to maintain safe skies across New Zealand.

This includes teams working out in the field to install and maintain surveillance, communications and navigation equipment located the length of the country. Others support our air traffic controllers to ensure they have the hardware and software to stay connected to pilots and each other. We also have teams focused on the future, designing and developing the technology for the next generation of aviation and air navigation services, as well as providing the full suite of technology solutions across all levels of the organisation.

Engineers and Technicians

Airways provides air traffic control guidance to aircraft via our navigation and communication systems. These computers, radar, radios, and other instruments and devices are installed and maintained by our talented team of engineers and technicians.

They work across communications and radio, network development and navigation systems.

This can include:

  • primary and secondary radar
  • multilateration and ADS-B (aircraft surveillance) systems
  • voice switch communications systems
  • radio communications systems including radio links
  • remote control and monitoring systems
  • flight inspection and calibration

Our network uses products from Cisco, Juniper, RAD, Frequentis and more.  Juniper is used as our MPLS backbone, along with RAD where required.  Cisco being used within the Enterprise, making up our operational and supporting networks.  We are a security focused organisation using a varying range of security appliances where required.

We have a full complement of network, systems and specialist engineers working across our technology undertaking design, development, post installation support, investigation and planning. Our team also provides full project and contract management.

Software engineers

New Zealand is one of only a handful of Air Navigation Service Providers worldwide who provide full support, maintenance, design and software development of its own air traffic management platforms. We also work closely with industry suppliers on a variety of other equally important software products which we support for in-house.

Air traffic control software is as complex as it gets. Our systems are safety critical and need to provide high availability and high reliability. Achieving this means working consistently to high standards. There is no downtime, the systems must run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, even during system upgrades. We work in a variety of programming languages across different platforms and operating systems.
