The current Auckland Airport air traffic control tower, which has been operational since the early 1960s, is reaching its end of life and Airways is evaluating replacement options in the context of the future aviation environment (2025 – 2040).
In September and October, we sought feedback from the aviation industry on the Airways’ preferred replacement option and implementation approach for our existing air traffic control tower at Auckland Airport.
The consultation asked for industry feedback on the three replacement options – conventional, hybrid and a full digital tower – as well as feedback on the Airways preferred option, which was a hybrid tower solution comprising a conventional tower for the existing runway and digital solution for controlling a northern runway, should the Auckland Airport proposal for this runway be completed.
Following consultation, we will proceed with the proposal to implement a Hybrid tower at Auckland Airport, supported by a digital contingency tower.
